Review of Cobra BiO Cell Iron
Written by John Barry
Photos by: John Barry, Bradley Clark and Foster Attebery
The snow keeps coming, the rain, the wind, but when will spring come? I hope it does soon as the golf courses demand their dose of my golf ball distribution program which I like to call my golf game!
Now nothing says spring golf like new clubs and I have the privilege of being a tester of the Cobra Bio Cell irons. Now the name Cobra Golf inspires me to bold colors and patterns, to roam the fairways and greens, to stand out and play with pride that appeals to all.
Performance
Short iron performance
accuracy- I have reached my goals! I have reached my goals! Please note that in my game, the shorter the better, and the accuracy of these rackets suit me perfectly. I seem to hit my #8 and PW more than any other club in my bag and I love these.
distance- With a game improvement iron I've generally found my distance to be around 5 yards, but with my clubs (my short irons) I'd say less than 2 yards.
baneegenskaber– Ball flight tends to be a little higher than my current irons and they are easy to get airborne.
forgiveness- If I miss these irons, which is less common than the others, the iron stays in play and never seems to be more than 10 yards off the line unless the dreaded carabiner comes into play.
steering- When I get close to a shot, I aim right in the middle of my aiming position. I don't have the ability to move it from right to left, and I have a repeatable ability to move it from left to right. I can still achieve that with Cobra Bio Cell Irons. Getting them in the air or keeping them lower in the wind is very possible with these.
Short iron score: 95
Mid-iron performance
accuracy– My mid irons, my current or BiO cells, tend to be much more offline than my short irons. That said, I find these average no more than 15 yards off the line. It may seem high to others, but to me it is between the trees and not in the water.
distance- They are about 5 meters shorter than my current clubs.
baneegenskaber- The ball flies in the air for me, great height and the trajectory I would expect from an iron that I would like to have in my pocket.
forgiveness- Here isCobra BiO Cell Eisenreally excellent for me. I keep hitting bad, flimsy shots and my current irons are really punishing me. Now my friends are amazed that even though it looks ugly, I don't search for 45 minutes to find my ball! This might be the most forgiving iron I've ever played.
steering- I can throw my ball up, keep it low when necessary and keep it in the middle of the pitch. That's all I ask of my irons and the Cobra Bio Cell delivers exactly what MyGolfSpy does!
Center Iron Rating: 96
Long iron performance
accuracy- Normally I only play long iron hybrids, so this was a pointless survey. The first few days on the course they were just like my current irons, in the woods or in the parking lot. I improved my accuracy with the BiO Cells, but not enough to feel comfortable in everyday play. Fortunately for those who prefer hybrids, Cobra BiO Cells are also available in a hybrid iron kit.
distance- My long irons are never long, they are like less precise mid-irons for me. In general I would say they are 5 to 7 meters shorter than my CB2.
baneegenskaber– When I cleaned them, the long iron height was great, even better than my hybrids. There may be some practice potential here.
forgiveness- Since 50% of my long iron shots are misses, I have to say they are not as bad or dangerous as my current irons.
steering- My control with long irons is like a Kardashian in the thong store, zero! This will serve as a debrief as I continue to hit them on the range and try to improve with long irons in general.
Long iron score: 80
Performance notes
Cobra Bio Cells is a game improvement kit designed to get you on the course in style, stay in the game and help you become a better golfer. You really can't ask for more from irons as a set of clubs. They look, they perform and they improve as advertised.
Overall performance score: 90
The subjective stuff
Appearance
general form: They are somewhat futuristic in their overall shape, but in terms of shape they follow the current trend of today's game improvement irons.
top line: The topline is neither thin nor so big that it distracts you, it's just average.
offset: There is a decent amount of offset that you would expect from a game improvement iron.
Diagram: Cool, stylish, pink (or almost any other color you like), fun, playful and naughty at the same time, kind of like yours!
Unique details: A unique cavity back weighted in different sports depending on the iron quality.
This iron is stylish but not classic, and classic isn't always a good thing. The game improvement category is crowded andBiO the onecan stand out from others because of the colors you can order the irons in. They really feel like a custom racquet rather than an off the shelf set.
Appearance score: 85
sound and feel
The irons have a solid but dull stroke when hit completely or slightly off-center. It's not a bad sound at all, because iron is meant to be seen, not heard! The feel is pretty close from the center out like most game improvement irons. It is consistent across short, medium and long irons.
Why buy these rackets? Because you're tired of losing a dozen or more balls per game. round. You want an iron that will keep you in the game and allow you to play the game from the rough and be free of crosses. They buy these because Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever stink during golf season! You buy these irons because you wear good pants and who wants to ruin them in the water or mud?
Sound and feel score: 82
Likelihood to buy (LOP)
How likely would you be to buy this iron? This is an iron I would buy, especially after maybe showing it off. They might not wow you like a shop iron, but they more than make up for it on the fairway and down the middle of the fairway! I would buy 2!
LOP-score: 100
Subjective notes
TheCobra BiO cell rentalattracts with a variety of colors. It will capture you with accurate images and bring you home with better results and a much more positive feeling. There comes a time when you have reduced your handicap, are playing your balls left and right and are in the middle of the fairway all the time. Until then, these irons are for you, at least for me!
Overall subjective score: 89
Diploma
A great man once said, "It's not how you play the game that matters, it's how you look at it!" This great man will remain nameless as he loves nice golf clothes and prefers to be on the course drinking beer and spending quality time with his friends. Golf is a social game, it is meant to be fun and not to be minutely managed and over analyzed!
Visually, this club looks like what it is: a game improvement club, but it retains the style that makes me wish Rickie Fowler would wear the clothes I'm wearing!
A topline that isn't super thin, but isn't distracting either. A hollow back with different colors to make you stand out on the court, like my pink clubs! Medium grips for my big hands and great style, stiff shafts for my swinging approach and an out of the box fit as I seem to be just average when it comes to racket fit.
From distance to distance the result was pretty consistent, my miss throwing a brutal hook that would make Smoking Joe Frazier proud. The Biocells were about 5 meters shorter than my Adam's CB2, but I expected a small reduction in distance. This was more than offset by the fact that my shots deviated from the line much less, even on misses. I also noticed a much higher launch angle.
Feedback was a little muted, but again this is a game improvement club and I didn't really get much feedback from the club anyway. I want to hit it straight, I'll do anything to hit it straight, and losing a few yards is a price I'm happy to pay.
The short and mid irons are all accuracy improvements for me. The feel is solid when I rinse them and still pretty solid and barely noticeable when I don't rinse them. I can actually feel them moving towards the middle of the fairway or green. As expected, the long irons, which I don't currently play, were more erratic. For me it's really worse the longer the shaft. I keep my 3, 4, 5 hybrids.
TheCobra BiO cell rentalCombined with my sense of style, my daring wit and my terrible game, they are a perfect match. These clubs go in my pocket; Yes, they are my bag, baby!
Total score: 89.5
At the end of each forum review, we ask our members to answer five very simple questions. We call it "The Five". Smart isn't it? This is what John Barry said about the Cobra BiO Cell Irons.
Of course
Does this iron fit in your pocket? Why or why not?
It's in my pocket baby! Why? Because I can find the ball I actually hit!
Who, if anyone, would you recommend this iron to?
My beer drinking weekend warriors who want to play and not spend all day looking for their balls!
How, if at all, has this iron changed your overall impression of the Cobra?
A club I knew would look good, but found out Cobra likes the Jedermann player!
What feature would you change or remove from the next generation of this model?
Maybe I'll find a way to add some more color and flair, maybe something to match my pants!
What feature do you really like and would you like to see kept or further developed in future models?
The emphasis on different irons and maybe a black finish to bring out the colors!
Cobra BiO Cell irons start at $699 for the traditional iron set with steel shafts. A hybrid iron combo set starts at $799.
