Uniroyal was founded in 1892 as the U.S. Rubber Company, but the company was first founded in 1868 by a veteran Belgian artillery officer, Oscar Englebert, who had a fascination with water-repellent rubber. The increasing demand for rubber products triggered a business boom, which Oscar took advantage of.
Under the leadership of Oscar Englebert Junior, the company grew and he first started experimenting with tires for bicycles and horse-drawn carriages, later he made car tires. It became the first tire company in the Benelux and one of the first on the entire European continent. Uniroyal quickly expanded its tire range to include racing tires and was the first tire to survive the 24 Hours of Le Mans without changing.
Uniroyal has developed a zigzag tread pattern that helps prevent skidding. This type of tread pattern became so popular that production quadrupled in 1914. Uniroyal developed the rain tire and used the water-repellent properties of the V-shaped profile. In addition, Uniroyal was the first company to use biomimicry to develop Shark Skin technology. The company has also been recognized for its various tire designs and received the prestigious Red Dot Design Award.
For more than 125 years, Uniroyal has continued to produce premium high quality tires and will continue to produce more innovative high quality tires. As long as there are vehicles that need tires, Uniroyal will be there rolling the world into the future.
